About

About Qanat of Gonabad (Qasabeh Qanat)

700–500 BCE. The concrete 27-m well shafts at 50-m intervals drop through loess to Pleistocene alluvium, delivering 150 L/s to the Gonabad plain pistachio–saffron fields and 3 ancient water clock (fenjaan) divisions still operated. UNESCO Persian Qanat World Heritage element ID 1506-001 dated to Achaemenid by ceramics in shaft spoil; Sassanian vaulted kariz tunnel sections with baked-brick arch survive under Gonabad historic core. Active with electric pump assistance but gravity flow maintained 70%.

Why it mattersOldest and deepest qanat prototype influencing all Iranian qanat technology.
