About Bata — Tsemes Bay Harbour at Novorossiysk
Harbour of Bata, Sindian Greek colony on Tsemes Bay, now under Novorossiysk commercial harbour at 3–8 m depth beneath modern concrete moles. Rescue archaeology during 1972 and 2010 harbour deepening revealed a Classical rubble mole 55 m long with ashlar facing (5th c. BCE), a submerged street and three courtyard houses at 4 Team harbour survey (1986) noted bora winds (200 km/h) that made Tsemes Bay treacherous — Bata's mole was angled 30° to bora to create a lee, a design lesson in ancient wind engineering.
Finds include Sindian pottery, Bosporan coins and a stone anchor inscribed 'Bata'. The harbour was abandoned after the 4th c. CE Hun sack and then silted under the Tsemes River, later overbuilt by Russian naval harbour 1845+.
Why it mattersOnly Sindian harbour preserved under modern Russian naval port; bora-angled mole demonstrates ancient wind-aware engineering.
