About Gorgippia — Southern Breakwater at Anapa Bay
Southern breakwater of Gorgippia's bay, a 75-m rubble mole at 4–6 m depth protecting the southern anchorage where Sukko River alluvium historically threatened to close the bay. The mole is built of limestone boulders over a submerged lagoonal peat (radiocarbon 3100 BCE at -5.2 m), capping a former wetland that became harbour after 400 BCE dredging (tool marks on boulders). Classical pottery (4th c. Attic black-glaze) dates the mole to 370–330 BCE, contemporary with central quarter quay. The bay's southern lobe silted from the 2nd c. CE Sukko progradation, burying the mole's lee side under 1.1 m mud and abandoning the harbour for the central basin.
